Admixtures are materials other than cement, aggregate, or water that are added to concrete either before or during its mixing to alter its properties, such as workability, curing temperature range, set time, or color. Some admixtures, such as calcium chloride, have been in use for many years to create a cold-weather setting concrete. Others are more recent and represent an area of expanding potential for increased performance. However, not all admixtures are economical to use on every project. Also, some characteristics of concrete, such as low absorption, can be achieved simply by consistently adhering to high-quality concreting practices.

The chemistry of concrete admixtures is a complex topic requiring in-depth knowledge and experience. A general understanding of the options available for concrete admixtures is necessary for acquiring the right product for the job, often based on climatic conditions and specific job requirements. Based on their functions, admixtures can be classified into the following five major categories:
  • Retarding admixtures
  • Accelerating admixtures
  • Super plasticizers
  • Water reducing admixtures
  • Air-entraining admixtures

History of Tri-Tex and concrete admixtures

1995 : Texall Inc. and Trichromatic Techno-Chem merge to become Tri-Tex co inc. They combine 68 years of total experience and have 150 employees. A year later they receive ISO 9001 certification in order to export to Europe and South America.

2001 : Tri-Tex begins construction of a new polymer department that includes 3 reactors for emulsion polymer production.

2004 : Construction division; Production of styrene-acrylic emulsion for the construction industry. (coatings, flooring, roofing, cement admixture, PSA)

2005  : Adhesives division; Mainly polyvinyl acetate polymers for woodworking, paper, and textile markets.

2005 : Tri-Tex acquires industrial adhesive group Sealrez Inc. They have more than 14 years experience in the adhesive industry. Product lines include hot melts, and water borne or solvent based epoxies and polyurethanes.

2011 : Tri-Tex forms a new division of concrete admixture, including hyperplasticizer from the polycarboxylate copolymer family.
